How to Conduct a Hassle-Free Move

Young couple looking into the box

Once you’ve finally found the right house, it’s now time to start packing up. While moving houses can be very stressful, there are plenty of ways to make the process as hassle-free as possible.

Read on to know how:

  1. Plan ahead

Preparation is key to a stress-free move. Don’t leave the planning to the last minute. As soon as you know your occupancy date, start planning out which items you’ll be packing first. Essential items should be packed and loaded last – these include toiletries, extension cords, cleaning supplies, and your toolbox.

Another important part of the planning process is deciding on whether or not to hire a moving company. Depending on where you’re relocating and how far away it is from your old home, figure out if it’s easier for you to enlist the help of family and friends or hire a professional moving company. It’s important to stay organized before, during, and after you move because it can save you a lot of time, money, and stress.

  2. Get rid of items you don’t need

One of the main reasons why moving houses can get so stressful is because of the large amount of items you’ll be transporting. Decluttering your home can solve this problem. Decide which items are unusable or no longer needed and sell or donate them. It will give you fewer things to pack, saving you more time and money.

  3. Pack up one room at a time

Packing can get overwhelming if you don’t know where and how to start. To save time, choose a room and start packing items that are the least used. You can leave the essential items behind until your last few days in the home.

One useful tip when packing is to color-code your boxes and bags. Label your boxes with the contents inside and what room they belong in. This way, you’ll have an easier time keeping track of stuff and unpacking in your new home!

  4. Use smaller boxes for heavier items

A common packing mistake is placing heavier items into bigger boxes. Doing this makes the box harder to carry and it could potentially injure whoever’s carrying it. Instead, place heavy household items into smaller moving boxes. Wrap the boxes with heavy-duty packaging tape afterwards to avoid the box from tearing open under the heavyweight.

  5. Carry important documents

Because moving can be chaotic, it’s very easy to misplace or lose important documents. Therefore, keep all important documents such as passports, birth certificates, and paperwork in one folder. Make sure that you don’t leave the folder inside any of the boxes or in the moving van as well.

  6. Keep children and pets busy on moving day

Moving to a new home can also be very stressful for children and pets. They could get restless or antsy, especially during moving day. Involve children in the moving process. Tell them what to expect and allow them to choose the special things they’d like to bring with them to their new home. On the day itself, keep your children occupied by planning fun activities for them. You can also have a friend or a trusted neighbor babysit both the kids and the pets.
